A St James security guard who was arrested in late August on suspicion of being involved in several robberies in the division and neighbouring parishes has been formally charged.

Shaquille Goldsmith, 26, otherwise called 'Seci,' of Barnett View, Mount Salem, has been charged in relation to two incidents so far, and detectives are continuing to review evidence in other reported cases. The charges of possession of a prohibited weapon, using a firearm to commit a felony, assault with intent to rob, and unlawful wounding have been laid in relation to an incident at Chambers Drive in Granville in the parish on August 24. Reports from the Montego Bay police are that about 9:14 p.m., Goldsmith and another man attempted to rob a convenience store. During their attempt, Goldsmith allegedly used a firearm to hit a man in his face multiple times, causing a wound that bled.

Goldsmith has also been charged in relation to an incident in Bloody Bay, Hanover, on September 10. It is reported that between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m., two armed men entered a business establishment and robbed the cashier of $25,000. They also reportedly took two stouts valued at $1,000 and six packs of cigarettes valued at $6,000. The men also allegedly opened fire at a security guard on duty who tried to intervene as they escaped.

Lawmen apprehended Goldsmith during an intelligence-led operation. A court date is being arranged.
