My father wants me to date church boys only
Dear Pastor,
I am 15 years old, and I read your column. I live with my father and stepmother. My father buys THE STAR every day. From I was 13 years old, he told me that I should read your column because it would help me.
My stepmother treats me well. My mother gave me to my father when I was three years old. My father then took me to my grandmother and she raised me.
Four years ago, my grandmother died and my father and I were alone until he met the woman who is now my stepmother. She is five years older than my father but she does not have children. She treats my father like a king and she loves him. She says that my father has spoiled me.
If she complains to my father about anything I have done wrong, he calls me in front of her and tells me that I should apologise. I don’t argue with my father because he calls her his queen, she calls him king, and I am his princess. He says we should live as a happy family.
My father told me that he does not want me to have a boyfriend because a boyfriend will lead me astray. He says an education is what he is willing to spend his money on. I have friends and they come to visit me, but they don’t sleep over because my father is against that. If I go to visit them at their houses, he picks me up by 8:30 in the evening.
I am very active in my church. My father does not go to church. I asked him if he would marry my stepmother and he told me time would tell. She said she would love to get married, but she is not pressuring my father to do so. She says he is the best man she has ever had in her life.
There is a man who is a member of the church she attends. He likes my stepmother and has tried to get her to go out with him, but she told him that she is not interested and that he should look elsewhere.
My father told me that, when I am 16, he will allow me to go out with boys, but not now. He also said I should only go out with boys who are in the church. I don’t see any guy in the church that I like.
Thank you for reading my letter and for giving young people like myself good advice.
D.
Dear D.,
Continue to obey your father. You are very fortunate to have a dad who loves you and supports you. You are also fortunate to have a stepmother who treats you well. I am sure you are aware that some stepmothers do not treat their stepdaughters very well. Many of them constantly lie on their stepdaughters. So, show respect to your stepmother at all times.
You did not say what profession you intend to pursue or what career you would like to work toward. Whatever it may be, put your whole heart and soul into it. Give it your best shot, so to speak.
Pastor
