Wolmer's's Boys' got off to a strong start in this year's ISSA/WATA Manning Cup football competition with an easy 6-0 victory over minnows Ascot, in their opening game at The Mico College University playing field yesterday.

The Jerome Waite-coached Wolmer's will be hoping to go much further than they did last year when they were knocked out at the quarter-finals.

Excelsior High, who are one of the favourites for this year's title, also recorded a big 7-0 away win over Bridgeport.

Meanwhile, first-time entrants Hillel Academy marked their debut with an easy 3-0 win over Meadowbrook, at the Calabar High School. Sean Fraser, head coach of Hillel, was very happy with his team's performance.

"They are very happy to get the first game out of the way. People will remember them being first-timers, winning their first game, but also the confidence and belief that they can come out of the zone," Fraser said.

"We won't be a beaten stick and I can go on record to say that, but at the end of the day we can't make any guarantees because we must come and put our best foot forward, everybody will now be giving their best."

Fraser, who has been working with the core of the squad for the past two and a half years, added that he was proud of their composure and discipline, despite the early nerves.

"I am very elated because I think that the boys played to instructions today. We could have done a little better, but the nerves kicked in as first-timers," he explained.

"I think we executed well in front of goal because we got some chances and we put them away, and overall the performance was good for me. But there is a lot more to do and a lot more to improve on going forward, especially when we play against a Wolmer's team which is so dangerous."

Fraser stated that he has been nurturing the group for the past two and half years through the age-group Colts and Pepsi competitions, and he believes that the experience will help them to adjust quickly to the demands of Manning Cup football.

"This programme has been at Hillel for two and a half years now, and I have been with these boys from that time," he said. "These are the same boys that are playing at the moment, so the progression continues, and they can play again next year. So this year is really about getting their feet wet and getting them competitive."
