Nevers ready to quit - Sunshine Girls assistant coach says he will consult his family before making a decision
Liverpool, England:
Jamaica's senior netball assistant coach Winston Nevers says he is not sure if he will be continuing in his role with the Sunshine Girls, this after their fifth-place finish at the Vitality Netball World Cup tournament, which ended here yesterday.
The Sunshine Girls, who are ranked second in the world, defeated Malawi 68-50 in the match to decide the fifth and sixth places at the M&S Bank Arena. The Jamaicans had a poor showing at the championships after they failed to secure a place in the semi-finals for the first time since 1995, which have left a lot of persons questioning the ability of the coaching staff.
Nevers, who has been the assistant to head coach Marvette Anderson just under a year now, told STAR Sports that like many Jamaicans, he is extremely disappointed with the Sunshine Girls performance at the championships. He underlines that he will be making a decision on his future after consulting with his family.
"I am definitely going to think about it in the next one or two weeks, and so I am not going to say anything more about it now," said Nevers. "Going back home, I am going sit with friends and family and then I am going to decide where I will go from there," he said.
"The president said she is going to make changes, and so maybe I am one the changes and maybe Marvette is one of the changes and so we just have wait on what is going to happen," he said.
Nevers, who has over three decades of coaching experience, noted that while he is still shocked by the Sunshine Girls performance, he has gained a lot of knowledge from the championships.
"It is a very good experience for me and I grabbed it with both hands and will move forward with it," said Nevers.
"This is very tough for me, because this is the first time that I am coaching the national senior team and to end like this is very disappointing," he said. "I know that the country was looking on me and the head coach to deliver, and the team is a good team that could have gone on the podium and we did not," Nevers stated.
