Montego Bay smash-and-grab rains on Arnett’s parade
Montego Bay United spoiled Arnett Garden's plans for a perfect return to the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex as they clipped the Junglists 1-0 last night in Wray and Nephew-sponsored Jamaica Premier League (JPL) action.
In the opening game of the double header, Spanish Town Police picked up three points when they shocked heavy favourites Waterhouse 2-1 in their encounter.
For the night's feature game, Okeemo Jones scored the all-important goal for MoBay as they left with all three points and maintained their lead atop the JPL standings with 26 points.
Arnett, on the other hand, sit eighth in the league table with 12 points, tied with Waterhouse, but hold the advantage with a better goal difference.
The Junglists went looking for the perfect start to their return to the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex and were nearly rewarded with an acrobatic finish in the first half but Giovanni Taylor's bicycle kick went over the bar.
Montego Bay had their own chances and were gifted a prime opportunity when Richardo Ramsey burst through on goal.
However, his lofted effort over the head of goalkeeper Anthony Bennett was just too much as it landed on top of the net.
The second half brought more opportunities and Jaheim Thomas saw his name in lights for a brief moment as his curling effort from outside the box was agonisingly wide of the upright.
Thomas had another opportunity fall at his feet as a delivery from Dexter Manning fell into his path.
However, he again failed to find the target despite the goalkeeper being left rooted in the centre of the goal.
Rushike Kelson was the next Arnett attacker who failed to find the back of the net when he was played in through on goal by Shai Smith in the 77th minute.
Kelson, breaking away from his marker, received the ball before driving a well-struck effort inches wide of the far right corner.
Arnett came to rue their missed opportunities as just three minutes later, they found themselves trailing against the run of play.
Montego Bay took the lead with just 10 minutes left on the clock after a free kick from Okeemo Jones deflected off the wall, beating Bennett between the sticks who was not able to get a strong enough hand on the ball.
Arnett's next fixture will see them facing off against Molynes United while Montego Bay will take on Waterhouse.
