Orgill leads Boyz to victory with first brace at home

Droves of fans turned up at the National Stadium last night to witness Jamaica’s first Gold Cup match at home.

Dever Orgill, who has never scored a goal for the national senior team, broke that spell inside 'The Office' last night in Jamaica's opening Group C Concacaf Gold Cup match against Honduras at the National Stadium, scoring twice to help The Boyz to victory.

Orgill, who had scored just once for the Reggae Boyz prior to last night's game, netted a brace (15 and 41) as Jamaica defeated Honduras 3-2 to kick their Gold Cup campaign off with a winning start. Central defender Damion Lowe (56) scored the other goal. Alexander Lozano (54) and Rubilio Castillo (90+2) got Honduras' goals.

Jamaica coach Theodore 'Tappa' Whitmore said they were complacent whenever they led and that they will have to be a lot more focus in that regard in the future.

"It's the start of the competition, so I am pleased with the win. Overall, complacency got the better of us, especially when we were leading two nil. We conceded two goals which is unacceptable moving forward. So we have areas of the field we need to fix but the importance was the result," he said.

He also had high praise for his two goal hero, Orgill. "Orgill is on the field to do what he does. He was excellent tonight. He worked hard and scored two goals and I am very pleased," he added.

BRIGHT START

Jamaica started brightly as they went in search of an early goal. However, the Hondurans soon took control of possession and threatened to push the host on the back-foot.

But Bayer Leverkusen star, Leon Bailey, who was making his senior national team debut opened up the Honduras defence with a sublime pass to Brian Brown, who lifted the ball across to Orgill who was lurking, at the back post and nudge home his first senior international goal on home soil.

The Boyz and 'Office' have not had a crowd pleaser in the ranks since the retirement of Walter Boyd, but former Phoenix Academy player, Bailey, kept the crowd on their feet and Hondurans on their toes for most parts of the first half.

Twenty-five minutes into the contest, the winger dismissed his marker down the right but goalkeeper Luiz Lopez was equal to the shot.
