Woman says she is owed more after getting over $1M in fraud case

July 15, 2026

A woman who was repaid more than $1 million by a Portmore car salesman accused of collecting money for vehicles he never delivered has told the court the payment isn't enough, insisting she is still owed more.

The dispute emerged when Adrian Cope appeared in the St Catherine Parish Court on Tuesday to answer charges of fraudulent conversion, breaches of the Consumer Protection Act and deceptive conduct.

When the matter was called before Senior Parish Court Judge Desiree Alleyne, the court was informed that several complainants had already received restitution.

One complainant was repaid $400,000, while another received $300,000, prompting both matters to be disposed of at their request.

However, another complainant told the court that although she had received $1,035,000, she believes Cope still owes her additional money.

Cope's attorney, Odane Marston, argued that his client only owes the woman the $1,035,000 because that was the amount transferred directly into his account.

Marston told the court that any additional financial arrangements between the parties were informal and should be dealt with as a civil matter.

The case was subsequently referred to Restorative Justice, with both parties scheduled to return to the St Catherine Parish Court on September 15, 2026.

Cope, who was previously granted $700,000 bail, also had his bail reporting conditions lifted.

Prosecutors allege that between June 9, 2020, and December 16, 2025, Cope collected more than $3 million from six complainants as payment for motor vehicles that were never delivered.

After repeated attempts to recover their money reportedly failed, the matter was reported to the police.

An investigation by the Portmore Criminal Investigation Branch led to Cope's arrest and subsequent charges.
