Send dem home Brazil fans rejoice as Paraguay knock out Germany
Spanish Town Road turned into an unexpected carnival yesterday, as supporters of Brazil erupted in celebration after football giants Germany were sensationally eliminated from the FIFA World Cup following a defeat in the round of 32 to underdogs Paraguay.
“Mi can’t believe seh dem gone home. Mi really think them woulda win this match but as of now, me a carry any side weh beat Brazil,” Germany supporter Marlon Hamilton said.
Many of the Brazilian fans didn’t hide their excitement that the result felt less like a neutral knockout fixture and more like a turning point for them to win in the round of 16, with some boldly insisting the path to winning the cup has become easier. Among the crowd reacting to the match was Oshane Hawes, and a very blunt Brazil supporter who goes by the moniker ‘Bullo’, whose reactions captured the raw emotion of Germany’s defeat.
“From the first half, mi know it never look right for Germany. Dem look too relaxed, like dem expect Paraguay fi just roll over. But football don’t work so,” Bullo said.
He said Paraguay’s discipline and hunger made the difference.
“Paraguay play like a unit. Germany look like every man a try prove themselves and them ova confident,” Bullo told THE STAR.
The match had been widely expected to be a straightforward win for Germany based on rankings and pre-tournament form, but instead it turned into one of the biggest shocks of the knockout stage. Paraguay’s compact defensive structure and aggressive pressing repeatedly disrupted Germany’s rhythm, forcing mistakes and capitalising on key moments.
Hamilton pointed to Germany’s wasted opportunities in front of goal.
“Dem get chances and just throw it weh. Dem shoulda neva miss with dem free kick deh.”
The game also sparked heated debate over the VAR decision that ruled out Germany’s second goal. Hawes admitted the decision was complicated but defended the modern interpretation of goalkeeper protection.
“It nuh matter if him only touch the keeper fi a second. The rules wid football now, keepers get a lot of protection. If you brush dem the wrong way, it’s a foul. So I can see why the referee call it even though him neva hold on pon him fi long,” he reasoned. However, Bullo dismissed the complaint from Germany’s camp.
“Even if the ref decisions questionable, Germany never control the game. Them couldn’t go no further anyway. Germany fans ago want blame VAR and say them shoulda win but Paraguay send dem home,” he said.
Germany’s late tactical changes also came under fire, with critics arguing the coach removed key penalty takers in extra time while chasing a late winner, a move that ultimately backfired as the match went beyond regulation time.
“All a the team dem a drop out early and mi did know seh a Germany did ago drop out first. A Portugal and Norway next,” Bullo said still celebrating as Germany’s exit was confirmed.
