The long and painful wait for justice in the shocking murder of social media influencer Donna-Lee Donaldson reached its climax on Friday when her boyfriend, Police Constable Noel Maitland, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Justice Leighton Pusey handed down the sentence in the Home Circuit Court a short while ago, bringing to a close one of Jamaica's most closely watched murder cases in recent years.

As part of the ruling, Maitland must serve 32 years and four months for the murder of Donaldson and three years and eight months for preventing the lawful burial of a corpse. The sentences are to run concurrently.

Donaldson, 24, vanished in July 2022 after being picked up by Maitland and taken to his apartment at Chelsea Manor in New Kingston. She was never seen alive again.

Despite extensive searches, her body has never been found.

The case gripped the nation for months as investigators pieced together what happened that night using circumstantial and forensic evidence.

On January 22, a seven member jury found Maitland guilty of murder as well as preventing the lawful burial of a corpse after deliberating for three hours and 36 minutes.

During the trial, prosecutors presented DNA traces and cellphone data which they said placed Donaldson inside Maitland's apartment before she disappeared.

Maitland, however, maintained his innocence.

In an unsworn statement from the dock, the policeman told the court he loved Donaldson and would never harm her. He also claimed that a "tiny spot" of blood found in his apartment could have been the result of a miscarriage during intimacy.

His attorney, Christopher Townsend, had earlier indicated that the defence was surprised by the jury's verdict and signalled that an appeal would be pursued.

Donaldson's disappearance sparked widespread public outrage and intense calls for justice, with many Jamaicans closely following every twist and turn of the trial.

With Maitland now sentenced, the case enters its final chapter, though the haunting question remains unanswered -- where is Donna-Lee Donaldson's body?
