Donut vendor meets with PM - Grateful for public’s support to see him become a registered nurse
The story of Janoi Calder, a donut vendor with 17 subjects who aspires to pursue a nursing degree, has captured the attention of many Jamaicans, including Prime Minister Andrew Holness.
Following the publication of his inspiring journey in THE STAR on Wednesday, the 'educated hustler', whose resilience and determination touched the hearts of many, has found himself on the receiving end of unexpected support. Calder, a hard-working entrepreneur who dropped out of college because of financial challenges, expressed his desire to go back to university to pursue a nursing degree. He took a leap of faith by reaching out for assistance in finding a guarantor and Holness responded.
"When I heard that I had an interview with the prime minister of Jamaica, I felt very elated. This goes to show that my story has reached the attention of many Jamaicans and the wide diaspora," Calder stated.
The prime minister took to his social media to express his commitment in assisting Calder. His statement was "Janoi represents the majority of hard-working Jamaicans who are ambitious and aspirational, and despite hardships and setbacks, stay on the right side of the law, work hard and continue to be hopeful and optimistic in their outlook. Every youth who abide by the law and are industrious should be acknowledged and rewarded."
Speaking with THE WEEKEND STAR on Thursday, Calder expressed his gratitude and amazement at the overwhelming response to his story.
"With my story being shared by THE STAR it is safe to say that my fellow Jamaicans have given me hope and I am deeply thankful to everyone who has come forward to encourage me to pursue my dream of becoming a registered nurse," he remarked.
Details about the nature of the support provided by the prime minister remains undisclosed, as discussions are ongoing.
"I am really enthusiastic about starting, and once I start, I know I will achieve my goal. When I am certain about the offers then I can make the further steps," said Calder.
Despite not expecting his story to reach as many eyes as it has, the donut vendor's story has become a symbol of hope and determination, resonating with individuals from all walks of life.
"When I made the video [pleading for a guarantor] and posted it on my Instagram [account], I had little or no hope that people would recognise it. I am so grateful for the assistance that THE STAR has given me to get my story out there, and I am using this opportunity to encourage others like myself to keep pushing, because one day the opportunity will come," Calder said.
