World Cup drowns out Christmas sales
Usually the arbitrators of fashion and style, cosmetologists on Princess Street in downtown Kingston say all Christmas trends are on pause until after the World Cup.
"Nothing nah gwaan, a World Cup time now!" Nastassia Findley, a lash technician declared.
According to the ardent Brazil supporter, since the start of the World Cup in late November, little else has been on the minds of the usually fashionable crowd.
Though attributing the lack of Christmas cheer to the 'Greatest show on Earth', the self-proclaimed doll said the rise of fast fashion has also added to the lack of recognisable holiday trends.
"Every day there is something new weh come up cause member Shein," Findley said, referring to the popular online fashion retailer.
"Them website so busy, you cannot keep up with fashion. Because every single day a something new out, so there is nothing weh you can say 'Alright, a that mi a guh wear'. You don't know if a shoes, you don't know. Not even hair you can keep up with cause every minute there is something new weh buss. So you just affi work wid di flow and make sure seh when things burst, you have your money."
She continued, "Normally one time when you woulda a shop fi Christmas from now, [but] people hardly a shop now cause people go pon IG (Instagram), dem go pon Shein and pon Amazon. "
Findley is, however, hoping that when the World Cup ends on Sunday, Jamaicans will shift focus to filling their stockings with trendy wears, thus giving retailers a chance to experience some merriment this Christmas.
