Many may remember entertainer Likkle Dainjah for his face-off with Maestro Don at the 2014 edition of Sting, as well as his 2015 arrest following his Reggae Sumfest performance.

But although controversy may have been the highlight of his earlier career, Likkle Dainjah recently signed a deal with Canadian label Tiffany Records, and is looking to chart a new course in music.

The entertainer told THE STAR that his journey in music has been rough.

He explained that after his Sting stint, he was hoping things would fall into place professionally.

"After getting that major highlight at Sting, I felt that it would be smooth sailing because everybody knew my talent and see that me a bad artiste. However, that's not how Jamaica works," he said. "You hardly find people who ride for the youths. You will bleach at studio every day and night and no rhythm to record on and when you finally get one single, the radio stations are not playing your music."

First-hand experience

Having had first-hand experience with how difficult it is for young artistes to catch their break, Likkle Dainjah wants gatekeepers to do more to help young talent.

"It is impossible for the same crop of artistes to sustain the industry forever," he said. "Right now I'm looking to go to Canada, and my shows look good so far, because they value youth. In Jamaica, we need to value our youth more and don't wait until foreign pick us up."

The artiste says he is looking to make a more positive impact on the industry, adding that while he is still capable of clashing, lyrical confrontations are not the focus of his career these days.

He says he is more focused on making music that will ensure longevity. With that said, the artiste is currently pushing his latest single, City Lights.

He said the song celebrates youths who have transformed dreams into reality, despite growing up in the ghetto.

"Dancehall was born in the inner city and City Lights basically a shine a light on all inner cities. Everybody can relate to this one and it has melody and a groove you can move to," he said.
