Parents upset I got my girlfriend pregnant

April 14, 2023

Dear Pastor,

I live in Florida. I came to America to go to college. I am 24 years old. I was not allowed to work for the first year. But I met a young lady and fell in love with her. She is 23.

She was born in America, but her parents are Jamaicans. I love this girl so much. Her father is a plumber, so I started to work with him although I didn't know anything about plumbing. He taught me about the job and he paid me very well. He was not afraid to tell me that he was paying me well because I was in love with his daughter. I did not idle on the job. He appreciated me and I appreciated him. He even allowed me to live at his house and share a room with his daughter.

My parents in Jamaica didn't like that, and they begged me to be careful and not to get the young lady pregnant. I didn't have to pay any money to the household, but I contributed to food. Her parents treated me as their son. My girlfriend's father bought me a pick-up truck so that I could go from place to place to do the plumbing.

Unfortunately, Pastor, my girlfriend became pregnant and we had to get married. We got married in a small ceremony one Saturday evening. It was after we got married that I told my parents that I had got the young woman pregnant. My mother told me she was expecting that to happen because I should not have been living at the girl's parents' house. I am still working with her father.

This girl is very quiet. Her parents are planning to pay our fare to Jamaica for my parents to meet the baby. I am anxious for that to happen.

Do you think I was wrong to stay at this girl's house? The only problem I am having is that she is very jealous. Whenever I get a call, she wants to know who is calling me.

F.G.

Dear F.G.,

It is too late now to find out whether you made a mistake by living in this girl's parents' house. When you told your parents that you were staying at their house, they warned you not to get the young lady pregnant. But, you were excited and didn't know how to control yourself, so you impregnated the young woman.

Evidently, the young lady's parents love you; they see something good in you. They believe that you will make a good husband to their daughter. I hope that you will not make a fool of yourself and get involved with other women. This man has even bought you a truck to get around doing the plumbing work.

Whenever the matter is raised again about the Jamaica trip, assure your in-laws that you will pay them back whenever you are in a position to do so. They know that it is difficult for you financially, but at the same time, you want them to believe that you are a good man. You need not worry about your wife's jealousy. She loves you dearly and she doesn't want you to be entangled with any other woman.

Make sure that you take care of your wife the very best way you can. And please let me hear from you again and to hear about your progress.

Pastor
