Glenmuir win 13-0 - Draw ‘feels like a win’ for St James
Glenmuir High thumped Bustamante High 13-0 to record the biggest margin of victory in the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition yesterday.
Orane Watson slammed in eight goals (10th, 33rd, 47th, 69th, 71st, 77th, 82nd, 84th, and Dunsting Cohen netted a hat-trick (13th, 23rd, 60th). Ricardo Binns and Orel Miller each scored one goal.
In other high-scoring matches, McGrath High clobbered Tacius Golding 9-0, while Munro College walloped Sydney Pagon High 8-0.
Meanwhile, it was all square between Cornwall College and St James High School, as the Zone A rivals failed to score at Cornwall College yesterday.
St James High's head coach, Bryan Stoney, says the outcome felt like a win for his team.
"Getting a draw for some of the players is a win because it has been a while since St James High had a result like this or a win against Cornwall College," said Stoney.
"We have quite a few new players who had goosebumps just playing today. We made some adjustments and played a more tactical game," added Stoney, who said he expected a draw.
Cornwall were more dominant, but they were unable to make any significant moves to win their second game of the season.
The boys from Orange Street threw their fair share of punches, but encountered stout defending from visiting St James High.
Cornwall's Carlondo Morris, Mekhi Foster and Demarco Finnikin had multiple shot attempts, but their efforts to score were made difficult.
In the second half, the game had more tempo but the goalkeepers had less work to do as there were no real shot attempts at goal for both teams.
Cornwall's head coach, Hector Wright, says his team was complacent.
"I think coming off that six-nil win played a part in them playing lacklustre," he said. "It was a lousy performance and, hopefully, in the game on Saturday they will pick themselves up."
Wright emphasised that the boys need to stay grounded and use the game as a marker going forward.
"We are going into the game with normal preparation on Saturday against Irwin. We try not to emphasise what the next team is doing, but more on what we are going to do," he stated, noting that if they play to their ability they will be victors.
