Ten men get the job done for Mount Pleasant
'CAPTAIN FANTASTIC' Sue-Lae McCalla's first half header was the difference as 10-man Mount Pleasant Academy defeated Suriname's Robinhood 1-0 to kick-start their Group A Concacaf Caribbean Cup campaign at the National Stadium last night.
Mount Pleasant were reduced to 10 men when striker Warner Brown was shown a straight red, 10 minutes into his debut, for dangerous play.
However, McCalla headed home a 36th-minute corner from Gadail Irving for the game's only goal.
"That is what you are going to get from Sue-Lae," head coach Theodore Whitmore stated post match. "Every time he goes out you expect 110 per cent."
Mount Pleasant were in control early had good efforts from range. However, things turned quickly when Brown, in attempting an overhead kick, caught the face of a defender and he was given marching orders.
Despite being a man down, the home team continued to control possession and in the 16th minute McCalla headed Demario Phillips' cross over from close range.
Robinhood started to get into the match after the 20th minute and came close to a goal when Allierio Belfor's header across goal escaped the touch of two converging attackers. A few moments later, Dan-Xavier Turr broke through but Tahari Chambers had his near post well protected to stop the effort.
Mount Pleasant took the lead when McCalla rose above the Robinhood defence to power home a corner.
Robinhood's best chance for an equaliser came towards the end of the half when captain Roshiano Soebarman's low shot whistled past Chambers' post after a deflection.
The visitors were better in possession in the second half but it was the home team who had the first chance. Devonte Campbell could not beat goalkeeper when presented with a clear chance and McCalla's follow-up effort was cleared.
Phillips also came close with a low drive inside the near post but goalkeeper Jonathan Fonkel parried for a corner.
In a frantic finish both teams created good half chances but neither were able to put the ball in the back of the net.
Whitmore said they are hoping to go.all the way, and he was pleased to start with a win.
"It is a game by game situation. We have completed this assignment and we look to the next assignment. We want to treat every game like a final.
"We just want to take it one game at a time. We don't want to look at the past. We want to look at where we are now, and the guys know the task at hand and we just have to work together," he said.
