Calvin sets sights on the big prize
On Sunday, Cavalier's leading marksman Jalmaro Calvin drew within a goal of the Jamaica Premier League's (JPL) leading scorer Warner Brown of Arnett Gardens, after bagging the lone goal in their second-leg semi-final win. The goal handed defending champions Cavalier a 2-1 aggregate win over Arnett and a place in Friday's final against Mount Pleasant.
Although winning the golden boot along with the JPL crown would be the ultimate achievement for Calvin (20 goals) he said retaining the title is his main objective.
"I am happy to score to bring my team to the final. I am a bit tired but I am glad I scored to keep close to him (Brown) but the main focus is to go in the final and win," Calvin said on Sunday. "It would be a big achievement (to win golden boot and JPL title) but as I said, my main focus is to get the team over the line.
"Obviously, if I get the chances, I will score as many goals as I can to win the golden boot but the main prize is the title."
Cavalier have had a long and arduous season, with 56 matches under their belt this season, and Calvin has been nursing an injury, while, like the rest of the squad, has been suffering from fatigue but he said they showed their typical resilience to advance to a third straight final.
"I am very proud of my team. In the first leg (semi-final) we made a couple mistakes and we didn't finish off Arnett Gardens but we went back to the training ground, corrected our mistakes, came back and did what we had to do.
"I had to fight through it and go out and play for my team. If I couldn't then someone else will get a chance. It's just the game," he commented.
The teams have a four-day break between the semis and final and Calvin said the most important thing for their team during this period is rest, as they will have to be at their strongest when they go up again Mount Pleasant in the title decider.
"They are a very tough team, so we have to go out and fight as they will come with their A game. We have to come with our A game as well and we plan to put in 100 per cent in the final," he stated.
