Richards is a fan favourite again
It is only three games into the 2019-20 Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) season , but Humble Lion's Rohan Richards has rekindled the form that made him a fan favourite when Jamalco, now Vere United, came into the league in 2016.
He has so far scored three goals from three matches, similarly to the start he had in the 2016-17 season.
The 25-year-old believes that the work he put in the preseason and the attacking role that coach Andrew Price has bestowed on him is getting the best out of him once again.
"The season has gone good for me so far. Three games, three goals. Last season this time I didn't score a goal. I don't think I even had a shot on target because it was hard to play my best game with all the defensive work I had.
"But I put in some good work in the preseason and I can see the work paying off. Last season, I did not play one 90 minutes, I always had to be coming off because of not being fit enough to play out games and now I have 90 minutes under my belt, because I put in a lot of work in the preseason. I also get a more attacking role and it is clear that I am playing much better this season," he said.
"The coach (Price) has also motivated me a lot. Last season, I wasn't enjoying my game because of the role I got. Now you can see me and the coaches working together and they are working with me. I have been putting in some hard work and they have been giving me good instructions."
The player is once again oozing confidence as he is feeling the adulation of the fans.
"Everybody is calling on 'Chucky', as he is popularly called, again and it's a good feeling, because when I was at Jamalco that's how it used to be. It seems I am getting back that form now, so you can see that I am enjoying my game again.
"I am training to maintain it (consistency) as best as possible. I won't say I will score every game but I will try as best as possible. 17 (goals) is my target because I have to set a standard that I know I have to work hard to reach, so even if I do not reach it, I can reach near it," he said.
