Victory lifts Racing above Waterhouse
Racing United FC overtook Waterhouse FC in seventh place on goal difference and cut sixth-place Tivoli Gardens' advantage to two points after scoring a 2-0 win over Vere Phoenix United in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) at Ferdi Neita Park yesterday.
Nickyle Ellis continued his good goalscoring form for the Portmore team with a 12th-minute opener, and Tyrone Mullings sealed the win with another goal in the 90th minute.
Racing climbed to 44 points, the same as Waterhouse, who will play Chapelton Maroons today.
Tivoli, however, stayed two points clear of Racing in sixth after their 0-0 draw with leaders Mount Pleasant Football Academy at Drax Hall.
Mount Pleasant, with 69 points, remain four points clear of Arnett Gardens.
Tivoli's coach Jerome Waite was pleased with the point and remains confident about his team qualifying for the playoffs.
"Today we came here with a purpose and I think the players did well because Mount Pleasant is a quality team and we nullified their offence," he said.
"We had a clear chance that (Odean) Pennicooke stopped us from executing. But both teams played well tactically in terms of their defensive organisation," Waite added.
"We are still looking for the team to continue their good showing and I am looking forward to the top six."
Although Mount Pleasant were idle for the two previous matchdays, coach Theodore Whitmore didn't think that factored into their performance and said they will look to get it right when they play Vere on Wednesday.
"We were off in terms of our execution. We didn't create enough goalscoring opportunities, but some objectives were met. We kept a clean sheet.
"We know what we have to do. It's in our hands. We just have to move on to the next game and get it right," he commented.
Meanwhile, Harbour View pulled further away from the relegation zone after a 1-0 win away at Dunbeholden.
Richard Brown's own goal two minutes before the half was enough to secure victory for the former champions.
Harbour View jumped to 31 points and one place up the table to 10th.
Molynes United FC and Humble Lion played to a 1-1 draw in a direct battle against relegation.
Richardo Ramsey put Humble Lion in front after two minutes, but Peter McGregor salvaged a point for Molynes United with a 58th-minute equaliser.
Both teams are now on 29 points. Molynes are 13th and second from bottom, while Humble Lion are a place above in 12th, but only on goal difference.
However, the point was good enough for Humble Lion's coach Alex Thomas.
"Certainly, we needed three points. Nevertheless, we got a point on the road for the first time since I've been here and that is a plus for us," Thomas said.
"We should have put away the game from the first half, but that is the nature of football. We just have to come again and stay positive," he added.
